Name:
VALORISATION OF THE INVASIVE ALGAE RUGULOPTERYX OKAMURAE
Developed by:
Instituto de Investigación y Formación Agraria y Pesquera, SPAIN
Country(ies) involved:
Spain
Funding sources:
National
General idea:
The coasts of Malaga and Cadiz are being invaded by this exotic algae and it is affecting the viability of fishing and tourism. A solution to the problem is being sought through research into the possibility of exploiting the biomass produced by the algae and researchers from the aquaculture and marine resources area of IFAPA are participating. The solution is to use the biomass as agricultural compost.
Description:
The general objective is the taxonomic identification and genetic characterisation of the R. okamurae algae, the identification of abiotic and biological factors that help to identify the causes of the presence of this algae on the Andalusian coasts and its possible evolution, and finally the analysis of control measures based on the valorisation of the biomass and biocontrol.
TRL:
5. Technology validated in relevant environment
