General idea:
Production of carbonate-rich powder from shells produced in mussel culture to be used as additives in feedings intended for poultry an livestock industries
Description:
Shells represent an important fraction of wastes in shelfish farming and an impacting fraction of biofouling organisms in fish farm structures. As the production and processing of bivalves has increased, efficient use of their shells has become important, not only to maximize financial return, but also to address waste disposal problems because of their slow natural degradation rate. Due to their calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-rich composition, shells can be largely exploited in downstream circular applications in several sectors, including the production of supplements for livestock and poultry (e.g., as natural additive to achieve an improvement in the egg quality and shell hardness), where the request for “natural” and eco-friendly ingredients and products is urged and strongly foreseen for future developments. Gargano Shell Fish Farm representes 7 IMTA farms located in Apulia Region where the circular approach and early adoption of downstream flows and reuse of the of waste and unexploited materials.
