Name:
Production and use of Salicornia spp. for halting coastal erosion and food production
Developed by:
Italy
Country(ies) involved:

General idea:
Cultivation of the halofite plants Salicornia spp. on marginal lands (i.e. coastal marshes characterized by high salinity) for food production, as a plant bio filter of marine aquaculture effluents or as viable source of biofuel for aviation
Description:
The Salicornia/Glasswort is spread at worl level. The project is based on the identification of S. areas cultivation for coastal erosion prevention and bioremediation, standardization of sustainable harvesting and processing flow of extraction of bioactive compounds from Salicornia/Glasswort both from raw and waste for three main pathways: functional food, nutraceutical and feed for aquaculture. The bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, Vitamins (A, B12), proteins and Omega 3 (linoleic acid), will be discovery and characterized from seeds and other plant parts, including the waste part of Salicornia (filaments).
