General idea:
The increased resistance of bacterial pathogens to antibiotics is promoting the use of alternatives for the treatment of bacterial diseases. Viruses that prey bacteria are named bacteriphages (or phages for short) are considering a promising strategy that has shown experimentally its applicability in aquaculture.
Description:
Phages are highly specific for their host. Accordingly, phages infecting bacterial pathogens of fishes will control these microorganisms while not affecting any other microorganism. Most importantly, they will not promote bacterial resistance to the antibiotics used for the treatment of human infections.
